Words for a partner

by Crystal
(England)

Someone recently related a story to me of having seen a man riding his bicycle, with his flowers giggling on the handlebars. When I queried why she said flowers, she told me that upon first hearing it (many years ago) she had mentioned it in front of her mother who said flowers is an old time term for a girlfriend or sweetheart. I checked your site but couldn't find any terms for either male or female partners.

Can you please confirm if Jamaicans still use the word "flowers" for a lady friend?

Thanks
Crystal

My response:

Hi Crystal - that term isn't much in use, except by people well up in age. Your question does bring to mind a song by Barrington Levy called "Black Roses" in which he uses the term Black Roses as a metaphor for his girl.
