Was down with a friend tracing his family heritage in and around Appleton, St.Elizabeth. Whilst driving around the back end of the tourist entrance we came across the train station. Immediately this brought back huge memories of riding the train from Appleton to Kingston; how the compartments were packed not just with passengers but goods being brought to market.
Response from Allison, Real Jamaica Vacations:
I am just seeing this submission, so sorry! It's a year later, and I regret to report that the Balaclava train station was completely destroyed about two weeks ago. We are not doing a good job of preserving our historic buildings. Much of our built heritage is disappearing before our eyes, and I worry that a lot of our history will be forgotten as the tangible markers of it fade away.
Let us hold tight to our memories!
